BSF | CRAFT BEER CHEFS' TABLE

For the past five years Beaufort Street has been my spiritual home.  My role as Food Director of the Beaufort Street Festival is a labour of love and allows me to collaborate with inspiring local businesses, creatives, foodies, chefs and likeminded souls.

In the lead up to the festival, our little food commitee curates events to showcase all the wonder that Beaufort Street has to offer.  We celebrate good food and drinks amongst amazing company whilst raising funds for the Beaufort Street Network, the not-for-profit driving force behind the festival.

Last year we focused on hosting our food events in unused spaces.  This vision aligned with the Beaufort Street Network’s efforts to create a public space on Mary Street.  For two weeks, Mary Street was transformed into a pop up piazza which was just lapped up by locals.  For years the local community has been yearning for a free, comfortable public space on the strip and now these dreams are being realised.  We are chuffed that the City of Vincent is now working to develop a permanent public piazza.

With our vision in mind the team at Five Bar jumped at converting their garage for our Craft Beer Crafts’ Table event.   The garage was transformed thanks to styling by Stacey Clark Stylist and we reveled in six courses of goodness by the talented chefs from Five Bar and Lot Twenty.  The spotlight shone on local breweries, with the gang from Eagle Bay Brewing Company and Homestead Brewery both attending to share their story.  A special shout out is definitely owed to Feral Brewing for a crazy end to the night with their lip puckering Watermelon Warhead sour.

Five Bar is one of those rare 'perfect for any occasion' spaces.  It holds so many warm memories from fun boozey birthdays to chilled out Sunday afternoons.  Nights celebrating life's special moments pouring frequent bottles of vino whilst enjoying beer cheese and charcuterie boards.  I have had countless delicious meals, loved every single beef wellington, attended a handful of beer tasting nights and have drunk a stack of perfectly priced ($2.50) coffees whilst abusing the free wifi during meetings.

This time, I caught up with two beautiful friends over a bottle of sparkling.  We chatted about the ups and downs of life.  We took in the relaxed atmosphere whilst  tucking into crunchy sweet potato fries with coriander mayo, crispy pan fried chorizo with fetta and olives, zucchini fritters and a soul nourishing reuben sandwich.

Five Bar

Five Bar is working wonders on the humble sandwich.  Medium rare sliced roast beef atop slaw doused in horseradish and pickles.  Corned beef amidst corned beef, Swiss cheese,  Russian dressing, and sauerkraut aka Reuben sandwich.  Venison chorizo with chutney.  And lastly the dish I simply can never look past ... steak tartare. 20120418-002735.jpg

BEERtasters Wunderbeer #3 at Five Bar

Five Bar kicked off February with a beer and food matching session showcasing great Australian craft beers. I have been lucky enough to flutter about promoting these events and always pop down to devour or just to say hello. Wunderbeer #3 was hosted by the wonderful Anthony Williams of BEERtasters and the girl that knows her beer very well, Pia Poynton of Five Bar.

The amazing photography is by Jessica Shaver.

BSF Five Bar ~ Beer & Cheese

Everyone thinks cheese and wine are the perfect match but beer can be just as fancy too! We sampled 7 different beers paired with beautiful cheeses designed to compliment and enhance these incredible flavours. We delved into uncharted territories of food and beer matching with Nick Bath, Director and Founder of Blue Cow Cheese Company and Pia Poynton of Five Bar.

BSF Five Bar ~ Around the World beertasting

We took a journey around the world with beer as our companion and Anthony Williams of BEERtasters and the lovely Pia Poynton of Five Bar as our guides. There is always something magical about the menu when Head Chef, Jamie Newbury is involved. Five Bar was recently nominated Best Bar Food at Bartender Magazine and after our little globe trot we could see why.

We sampled seven different beers with food inspired by its country of origin.
