EAT | SIXTEEN OUNCES (Victoria Park, WA)

sauerkraut and a lonely pickle

There has been a bit of a fermenting frenzy circling our office.  Kombucha bubbles at our desks and words such as scoby and kefir often fill the air. Fermentation is an ancient 8000-year-old practice, responsible for delights like kimchi, sauerkraut, yoghurt, wine and cheese and stinky stuff like nato (eewww).

Since local fermentation goddess Lisa Thornton of Get Cultured pickled it up on air for our RTRfm 92.1 show The Food Alternative, my interest in pickling, fermenting and basically cramming anything into a jar quickly escalated into an obsession. So when I found both sauerkraut and a lonely pickle on my plate at Sixteen Ounces, I instantly called it love.

Bratwurst hollandaise is a pretty plate of streaky bacon, sauerkraut, shaved parmesan, gherkin, poached egg and greens for $16.80.  I ordered mine sans toast which is my idea of starting to watch what I eat in the new year (note I still ha…

The crew here use Five Senses Coffee and always put on a good brew.  We had a long mac (topped up) and flat white.

Sixteen Ounces' Farmhouse Brekky is everything you (okay .. or your ravenous boy who isn't bent up on the pickling phenomenom and who can happily eat bread three times day) have ever wanted in a big breakast.  Complete with double meat streaky bacon and bratwurst plus poached eggs, mushroom, baked tomato, greens and toast all for $21.50 which is pretty reasonable when it comes to morning delights in Perth.

EAT | BREAD IN COMMON (Fremantle, WA)

I am quietly in love with the idea of ordering plates to share for breakfast.  Bread in Common with its breezy, communal feel is just perfect for conversations, sharing and breaking bread.

Solomon's Cafe

Solomon's Cafe

It's almost kinda hip to have an allergy these days.  Those buzz words raw, paleo and gluten free are now so proudly spoken.

With all the talk of nourishing thy body and people embracing a cleaner way of eating, its no surprise that Solomon's Cafe is bustling.  Holistic eaters have welcomed the latest offering brought to Beaufort Street by local hip-hop artist Drapht and his sister Alisa.

Here you can treat your body to a smoothie or two then enjoy the best damn pumpkin pancakes you have ever dreamed.  I am pretty sold on the breakfast offerings at Solomon's.  Healthy and nourishing, its a lovely way to start your weekend.

Ain't no party like a cheese toast party!

With its namesake a clever play on Wu-Tang words, Toastface Grillah was carefully curated to reign supreme.  You can't help but  think .. how was this not thought of earlier?!

Tucked away down Grand Lane (home to Lightspace Lockers amongst other sweet projects) this little toastie joint breathes life into a somewhat seedier part of the 'hood.

The sunny outdoor area is a mix of crates and makeshift seats making it the perfect place to hang as you suck up some rays or shelter from the  rain.

Relax, kick your sneakered feet up and knock back a coffee (which I hear is first rate) or in my case a bottle of Sarsaparilla whilst you wait for the magic.

We ordered an Apple & Gouda and a Ham & Cheese both ticking all the right boxes and gobbled down in seconds.   I think what makes a good toastie are a) two thick slabs of wonderful white bread b) a generous application of salty butter 30 good quality (and plentiful) cheese and trimmings and d) it must be thrown onto the grill at the right temperature instantly sizzling the butter warming up to golden brown as the cheese slowly melts down the sides.

Whilst I would have loved to tear through the menu chowing down multiple toasties my gluten hatin' tummy would not have left smiling.  But that's okay ... I am quite alright with tackling each menu item one visit at a time.

Yee hawww!

If you are craving a dash of Canadian charm with your bottomless jar of iced tea, then head to Inglewood’s latest eatery for a comfort food fix.  This little piece of the US is the brainchild of Perth’s favourite Scotsman, Iain Lawless, and Liam Atkinson who spent a few years in the Rocky Mountains polishing up his Western ways in the kitchen.  Miss Kitty’s Saloon is full of all those things that make you smile and want to bootscoot.  Doughnuts, ribs for breakfast, poutine and fried chicken on waffles, what more could you ask for.
