Often whilst travelling cravings for a no-fuss-could-have-made-this-at-home breakfast kick in. When these urges hit, we scoured Instagram for simpler plates and stumbled across Nelson the Seagull.
Open yet homely, Nelson the Seagull is a bakery, coffee house and cafe and a favourite amongst locals. Avocado on sourdough toast allowed a nice break from the waffle-laden menus of Vancouver. Rare roast beef and a miss mash of breakfast sides was a gamechanger. Great coffee and freshly baked sourdough - you can't go wrong here.

You'll find the bright and airy Barry on the Northcote high street. The heartbeat of the cafe is a little duller since changing hands recently but still a good spot for easy brunch.
Set on the corner of Rose Street in Fitzroy, Industry Beans is fast becoming one of my go-tos.
Apparently bacon and eggs is the 'world's best breakfast' (cough *boring). I beg to differ.

This corner cafe in Fitzroy is always buzzing. Creative plates, great coffee and a line that moves pretty quick if you have a flat white in hand. Addict Food & Coffee I'll see you again soon.
Victoria Street in Abbotsford is known for its smattering of Vietnamese restaurants. Little Big Sugar Salt popped up in 2013 much to the delight of brunch go-ers. Hip fit-out and every dish is oh so Instagram worthy. Definitely worth a visit next time your in Melbourne.

Traditional Singapore breakfast - Layer Sprolo's house-made kaya jam and salted butter on the sourdough toast for a sweet and salty dance on your tastebuds.
Then top the sous vide eggs with pepper and a lug of soy, stir it all up and dip right in.
It's true, Mary Street Bakery is my favourite place for breakfast. Maybe its my soft spot for Beaufort Street, or perhaps its because you can order gnocchi and icy pops before noon. I always find myself torn between two dishes, so I do what any sensible person would do in my position … I order both and the waitstaff pretty much give me a 'hell yeah' high five. Maybe its this total acceptance and applauding of overordering that keeps me going back.

There is something about finding little gems in the 'burbs. Recently over dinner we were talking about those places you almost want to keep a secret for fear of the masses taking away the ease to grab a table at your favourite haunt. Rotana on Eighth Avenue in Maylands is going to be one of those places.
A mismatch of Western eats amongst deliciously authentic Middle Eastern plates, forget bacon, eggs and the tomato sauce and go straight for the mezze.

I thought the Grilled mixed plate was awesome value considering what you usually get for $24 at the pub. A mix of beef, chicken and lamb skewers served with rice, fattoush, pita, hommous, garlic dip and baba ghanouj.
Is it right to eat dessert at breakfast? Mary Street Bakery's head chef Courtney Gibb is forever pushing the breakfast boundaries and turning the boring ol' hour of eggs on toast and bircher on its head. Our ensemble had the air of a decadent evening meal but was happily consumed with coffee before the clock struck 10am.
A luxe way to start the weekend with favourite friends Ai-Ling of Food Endeavours of the Blue Apocalypse, Custard & Co's hustler Caitlyn (also of Mixed Dozen) and Stacey Clark Stylist. We spent the hours talking shiny new diaries, pop up dining adventures with Custard & Co that will soon fill up our calendars and all the wonders that inspire us about embracing the clean slate that is the new year. Fuelled by salted caramel, candied bacon and caffeine we went on our merry way clutching our Custard & Co Family Xmas ciders.

Having a bakery on Beaufort Street has added many inches in all the wrong places but meh ... I would rather enjoy my breakfast with reckless abandonment.
Mary Street Bakery will soon be turning one and has been buzzing ever since they opened their doors. I love that the menu changes frequently enough to keep me amused but they still have all those favourites that keep you coming back. Did I mention salted caramel doughnuts?. This time it was my treat for my little sister's birthday.
Birthday girl enjoyed slow cooked eggs on sourdough with crispy bacon. Sometimes you just want bacon and eggs huh? I took those two elements to the next level with a pork scotch egg served with onion mojo and cress. I don't think I have ever had a scotch egg so full of flavour cradling it's own perfectly cooked egg. We also chowed down kipfler potatoes with aioli and a lovely big squirt of sriracha.
'Sea Circus is not an actual circus*. It’s also not on the sea. It’s kinda near the beach… and probably as entertaining as a circus. OK, Sea Circus is an odd name. But it’s a really good restaurant, bar & coffee den thingy. So there.'
Sea Circus will have you dreaming of pastel coloured coffee cups with gorgeous notes of fortunes long after you say goodbye to those balmy nights.
This colourful gem is one of my absolute favourites in Bali. The pretty rainbow window panes welcome you in with the bright décor begging you to nestle in all day long. They offer a simple menu for breky, lunch and dinner, delicious cocktails and bangin’ good coffee by Five Senses.
I tucked into corn fritters with feta, chili jam and rocket with a side of avocado. So refreshing to not be lining up at some buffet eyeing off strange looking bacon. The 'rocket fuel' was the Danny Zucko of ice coffees, lovingly cold dripped over eight hours.
Vibrant chevron stripes and quirky touches adorn every inch of this merry eatery. You just can't help but make you fall in love, especially when you leave with a happy tummy.
Complimented by friendly staff and great food, you would rather stub your toe on the wonky Bali pavement then miss out. Make sure Sea Circus is your first stop on your next Bali adventure.

It is safe to say that we are now spoilt for choice when it comes to good eating. Whilst all the new digs popping up make me a little giddy, there is something so satisfying about visiting an old flame.
West End Deli holds so many wonderful memories which would make your tummy rumble. Poached quinoa with stewed rhubard or pulled beef hash and a glass of cherry coloured ice tea with star anise that bobs its way to the top after every sip ... ahhhhh.
Sometimes you just want to stick with what you know and love.
West End Deli with it's brooding blue walls and antique bric-a-brac was doing that rustic look long before the rest. Each morning they serve up brunch and you can enjoy their dinner menu in the later parts of the week. Tucked away on the North Perth side of Carr Street you often forget it is there. We ventured here for a lazy Sunday morning indulgence.
Just when you think bacon and eggs is erring on the boring side, a monster serving of Elmar's double smoked (extra thick) bacon hits the table. Served with perky poached eggs, freshly baked baguette and a disc of salty butter. A side of smoked creamed corn brought me back to childhood breakfasts with my dad just this time without a side of chops, chips and eggs. The mushroom terrine with blue cheese butter was a rich explosion calling for a tart glass of ice tea to break through the decadence.
The Tasmanian salmon is not your usual breky suspect. Served Japanese style with sesame, spinach, slow egg and enoki mushrooms. The miso broth giving the dish a smooth hit of umami. It tasted like heaven and for once I actually left breakfast with a spring in my step rather than waddling out ready for the couch.
West End Deli is one of those venues that has stood the test of time. Homely with a lively atmosphere and thoughtfully crafted menu topped with baked goods that will having you coming back again.

Mary Street Bakery is the latest addition to the ‘hood from the community driven boys behind Cantina 663, el PUBLICO and Ace Pizza. It’s neon pink sign luring you into their latest sweet love affair. A great lazy stag horn droops down over soothingly bare walls. Pretty mosaics add texture and the timber features dotted with greenery breathe in the supple lights. Mary Street Bakery oozes effortless detail … Soto who?

I love impromptu breakfasts. Especially those with friends who have just returned from honeymoons with plenty of adventures to share. We caught up Hayleigh and Stephen over breakfast and the hugest mug of coffee I have ever seen at Chapels on Whatley. Chapels is a furniture store come cafe known for its diverse menu with an Asian flair complimenting the extensive selection of tea available.
I didn't feel like anything too breakfast-y so I ordered the Asian noodle omelette. I drowned it in extra chilli and soy sauce and it hit the spot. I must admit I did feel a little sullen when the pancake stack arrived.
There is something so damn magical about the ménage à trois of banana, bacon and maple syrup. Add these cheeky three to a stack of fluffy pancakes and you are in absolute bliss. God bless America!
Circa has opened in the long forgotten Diva site on Beaufort Street. The decor is rich with opulent finishings making it a little too dark and gloomy for breakfast. The sunlight just peaking in through the open doors. By night you could definitely imagine cramming into a booth with a bunch of friends sharing hearty Mediterranean fare and a bold bottle of Shiraz.
The breakfast menu consists of approachable breakfast items such as:
Poached apples, pears, rhubarb with granola crumble
Sicilian sausages, poached eggs, sautéed mushrooms, spinach, manchego
Smashed avocado, roasted tomatoes, fetta, sourdough, olive oil
I do love a good Croque Monsieur so we ordered one to share. The sandwich came out drowning in béchamel sauce and stuffed with honey baked ham, swiss cheese and dijon mustard. The bread lots its toasted crunch as it battled with the overflowing sea of sauce.
The beetroot cured salmon was a refreshing light option. Served with a slice of green vegetable frittata on sourdough. Topped with a lovely dollop of a familiar something, maybe hollandaise and creme fraiche, which added a delicious punch of buttery zest. The poached eggs served on organic Loafer's sourdough were beefed up with a side of bacon, the yoke perfectly runny.
I wish I had taken a peak of the dinner menu. Circa has taken off where Diva left off making it a nice local restaurant to enjoy welcoming service and simple, homely meals with family and friends.
