ACE PIZZA

If Cantina 663 and el PUBLICO were your big brothers, the shoes to fill would be rather large.

Ace Pizza was born into the world gifted with the same strong genes. Inheriting the trait of striking good looks, charisma and charm.  The trio, Alex Cuccovia, Paul Aron and Michael Forde, have fathered yet another gem to join the Beaufort Street family.

You will find Ace in the shyer part of Mt Lawley, the telltale neon sign glowing from within, throwing green shadows onto the street where you must take the side entrance.   A big black couch tells your toosh to take a seat, relaxing here if you don't have a booking.  Otherwise you will retreat straight to a booth with a good bunch of friends sipping an Americano or two on tap.  Perched at the bar, you have a view of the open kitchen.  You can sit taking in the energy, watching the magic happen or marvel at the array of aperitifs and digestives.  Whether in a two, on a first date or a rowdy table of ten I feel that this place will do the trick.

The menu is quite extensive and there is something for everyone.  Amongst the choices of pizza there are plates for sharing; dishes flamed in the wood grill and hearty offerings of pasta; whatever you fancy, Ace has got your back.

The 'pork and pistachio slab' terrine was full of flavour.  Its gelatinous texture set off by the crisp pickled vegetables and house baked rye bread.

Seriously, when was the last time you turned down deep fried cheesy pasta?  This is the second time I have ordered the 'fried mac and cheese', this time slathering  Ace chilli sauce all over the oozing cheesey cut slabs.

A gorgeous selection of mushies were served on a soft bed of buttery polenta and sprinkled with lashings of shaved cheese.

The 'flat iron quail' from the Wood Grilled menu was succulent.  It is hard to enjoy these daintily!  The garlic aioli was salty working well with the refreshing fennel salad and orange cheek warmed on the chargrill.

Cynar and chinotto share the same herbaceous, bitter citrus notes.  Both muddled with mint and lemon and named 'the black doctor' made for the perfect mid meal digestive.

And it was our mains that really stole the show.  The fat pasta, rabbit and porcini was comforting and satisfying and it will be one of those meals that will definitely be ordered again.

Now when I dream of lasagne I will dream of this.

'Dad's lasagne' was served in a cast iron pan lovingly layered with béchamel, cheese and slowcooked beef tail.

nd we ended our meals the only way we know how, washed down with Italian specialties Averna and Amaro Montenegro.

Ace Pizza will be the place to go over the coming months.  Delicious meals and pretty easy on the wallet. This is one Italian restaurant I would be happy to line up for.

Yee hawww!

If you are craving a dash of Canadian charm with your bottomless jar of iced tea, then head to Inglewood’s latest eatery for a comfort food fix.  This little piece of the US is the brainchild of Perth’s favourite Scotsman, Iain Lawless, and Liam Atkinson who spent a few years in the Rocky Mountains polishing up his Western ways in the kitchen.  Miss Kitty’s Saloon is full of all those things that make you smile and want to bootscoot.  Doughnuts, ribs for breakfast, poutine and fried chicken on waffles, what more could you ask for.

Miss Kitty's Saloon

Miss Kitty's Saloon draws inspiration from the wild wild west serving up delights such as sticky tamarind ribs, frickles (yes .. fried pickles), devilled eggs and crunchy delicious fried chicken bits on a waffle bed.   And that is just for breakfast!

The saloon is swiftly drawing enough cowboys to keep it rammed all week long so be sure to book.  The perfect place for well priced, tasty food with a Canadian twang or a drink after work.

Grill'd

Burgers with babes. We thought we would make use of our Roving Dinner vouchers to guts on grilled delights. My bf thinks the Summer Sunset burger should only be consumed in the wake of a drinking expedition. I disagree. Bacon and pineapple, salty and sweet; this marriage makes me happy.

Bellies (almost) full we took a pit stop at 50ml before Luna Cinemas to pick up cupcakes and chai for movie consumption.  Trishna, an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles, was destined to finish on a tragic and teary note.  Sob.

The Beaufort Street Merchant

I met with my fellow food loving friend Foodie Cravings and aghast! we went without eating.  I forgot how much I love coffee dates, less time chewing means more time for chatting. Michelle and her husband recently opened Crust Mt Lawley.  Working full time, running Crust, satisfying foodie cravings and blogging .. she is one busy lady.  So wonderful to hear that the pizza oven is cranking day day in day out keeping the hungry people of Highgate happy.

Special advanced and humungous thanks to Crust for donating vouchers to our Autumn Roving Dinner goodie bags.

Every time I eat here I say OH BLESS. I think we all fondly remember eating at the old location. The little arcade, with the outdated magazines and five little tables. I always want to get up and clear all the tables for them and get their new site organised. Its still damn tasty and easy on your pennies so all is always forgiven. I just love the staff and especially the owner .. oh bless! 20120422-095337.jpg

Daily Planet

It is always too long between ... ummm breakfasts with Liz.  When we catch up its always amaze! Liz has her own blog Breakfast in Perth and is getting pretty famous now!  Very exciting that she is taking her writing to the next level under the wing of Rob Broadfield for the Good Food Guide.  AMAZING! So proud! We spent the morning pondering food, friends, reminiscing on Teknoscape days and Perth Dance Music Awards. I eat so healthy at home and at work ... its the dining out where I tend to be extravagant.  For the average person that is fine. That is what life is about ... every now and then going out and spoiling yourself.  BUT my butt has been expanding due to the fact that I eat out a hell a lot more than your average Joanne.

I ordered the vegan stack.  Not something I would usually order but I just felt like having salad for breakfast seeing as my cold has stopped me from sweating out in the hot room.  Caitlin (best barista and full of fun) informed they were out of avocado but had added honeyed parsnip. Naturally the chickpea fritter was a little dry but the aioli and juiciness of the tomatoes made up for it.  The parsnip was definitely a welcome addition and the verde added freshness.  So nice to walk away from breky not in a carb coma!

I thought the food was really reasonably priced and it was so damn good to order a Caitlin again.   Free wifi is always a plus too!  Don't read all the urban goon reviews until you have made up your own mind.

THE CAITLIN: ristretto, honey, ice + a red haired barista These bad boys have gotten me through many many meetings.
